I was stuck on what one character should’ve been doing. I shelved the book I was writing, which was accustomed to neglect by then, and it was just as well. I didn’t, because that would’ve been impossible even if those plays were the only thing I taught that semester, and I had three other unrelated classes. I picked some plays and tried to read everything ever written about them. Probably, maybe, but the plays in my head took his advice.ĭespite lack of expertise, I was (once, in a pinch) tasked with teaching a college course on Shakespeare. “That moment was metafictional-he was being sarcastic!” experts will protest. The performances I’ve seen do what Hamlet explicitly tells actors not to: scream like town-criers, stressing all the wrong words and winking to signal puns. The only Hamlet I’ve liked was Iain Glen in the movie adaptation of Tom Stoppard’s play Rosencrantz and Guidenstern Are Dead. I’m a fan of reading the plays, not watching or hearing them, a statement most Shakespeare experts deem profane. The multiple Oxford, Arden, or Cambridge editions never agree with each other about a stage direction’s “authenticity.” Then there’s Harold Bloom’s old-guard-turned-hot takes, Steven Pinker’s framing of Shakespeare as a psychologist, and a book worth reading, Marjorie Garber’s Shakespeare After All (enlightening, comprehensive, and readable).Īll this is to say: I’m not an expert on Shakespeare. By the sixth line in an 1866 New Variorum edition of Othello, the commentators are waging a footnote battle with a word count threatening to eclipse the play’s. Expertise is evasive, but not for lack of trying.

CADintosh is a high performance 2D CAD program for technical draftsmen and designers. The funding would come from the resources of regular public schools: each student would “carry” his or her per-child funding out of the district system to a charter school. These were to be taxpayer-funded schools, but privately run and exempt from many of the regulations governing district (regular) public schools. This story begins in 1995, when the Washington State House of Representatives first considered legislation that would enable private individuals and organizations to obtain charters to create their own K–12 schools. The Case of Bill Gates and Washington State It’s a textbook example of the tug-of-war between government by the people and uber-philanthropists as social engineers. What follows is a case study of the way charitable plutocracy operates on the ground. Like all forms of plutocracy, this one conflicts with democracy, and exactly how these philanthropists coordinate tax-exempt grantmaking with political funding for maximum effect remains largely obscure. They translate their wealth, the work of their foundations, and their celebrity as doers-of-good into influence in the public sphere-much more influence than most citizens have.Ĭall it charitable plutocracy-a peculiarly American phenomenon, increasingly problematic and in need of greater scrutiny. They aim to do good in the world, but each defines “good” idiosyncratically in terms of specific public policies and political goals. The trustees would spend the earnings of the endowment to pursue a typically grand but wide-open mission written into the foundation’s charter-like The Rockefeller Foundation’s 1913 mission “to promote the well-being of mankind throughout the world.” Today’s multi-billionaires are a different species of philanthropist they keep tight control over their foundations while also operating as major political funders-think Michael Bloomberg, Bill Gates, or Walmart heiress Alice Walton. Once upon a time, the superwealthy endowed their tax-exempt charitable foundations and then turned them over to boards of trustees to run. Concepts represented by points that are near to each other are more psychologically similar than are points that are conceptually distant. Similarity between concepts is a function of the distance between the concepts in space. Transformation - If one thing can be changed into another thing easily, either in the real world or in a person's mind, people might say the things are similar (a seed is similar to a plant. Similarity (psychology) Similarity refers to the psychological degree of identity of two mental representations. Also, if the first parts of the words for two things are the same, people might say the things are similar. Phonetics - If the words for two things sound the same, people might say the things are similar. Hierarchy - If one thing is a small part of a larger thing, people might say the things are similar.Functions - If two things are used for the same reasons, people might say the things are similar.(coins and wheels are similar, because they are both round.) Similar features could include: shape, texture (what the surface looks like), material (what something is made out of), color, weight, size, temperature, and other features. Features - If something about two things are the same, people might say the things are similar. How do people decide that two things are similar? When it comes to similarity, this might include listing words, using categories as clues for learning new words, sorting objects into groups, or other tasks that have to do with comparing things to one another.ĭepending on how quickly people do these tasks, or how many mistakes they make, psychologists can find out what rules they are using to decide if things are similar. Once a model can respond with the correct (similar) words, then it is likely that the rules the computer program uses are the same rules that people use to decide whether words are similar.īehavioral research Īnother way that psychologists look into similarity is by putting people in special situations and watching what they do. Computer models do this by applying some set of rules to a large collection of real world text (called a corpus). For instance, a person might say that "cat" and "dog" are similar words, so a good computer model should be able to take the word "dog" and respond with the word "cat" in a list of similar words. Then they will write a computer program that tries to simulate the same answers that the humans gave. Scientists will, for example, ask people to rate a number of objects as more or less similar to each other. One important tool used by psychologists to look into similarity is computer modeling. Many psychologists try to find out what rules people use when they decide that two things are similar. What is the similarity principle Gestalt Principle : Similarity 1 The principle of similarity states that things which share visual characteristics such as shape, size, color, texture, value or orientation will be seen as belonging together. How do the attitudes that humans maintain about these intelligent systems reflect those that they maintain about other humans? How do they differ? And, what do these similarities and differences reveal about human cognition more generally? In this talk, I discuss a series of experiments related to these questions and highlight how they are helping us develop smarter artificial intelligence.Similarity in the area of cognitive psychology refers to things or ideas that people put together in the same groups, or categories, in their minds. Gestalt psychology focuses on how we perceive individual items as a whole. Google Maps), are increasingly the subjects of such attitudes. AI systems, from conversational virtual assistants (e.g. Some illustrative examples are: they believe that others will follow through on promises, hope that pets will remember and abide by basic training while they are home alone, and trust that a fiduciary will act in their best interest. Humans maintain a broad set of attitudes (mental states) towards the thinking-things that they encounter. My research exists at the intersection of human cognition and technology and is best described as an attempt to answer two related questions: 1) How do humans think about the minds of machines? 2) How do (or can) machines think about the minds of humans? I blend behavioral, data, and computer science approaches in service of answering these questions. I am also a first-generation college graduate (Utah State) from South-Central Idaho and most everyone I know calls me Nik. in Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Social and Decision Sciences in May of 2020. Infinity Wings: Scout and Grunt is an Action, Arcade, Space, Side-Scroll, and Single-player video game developed by Xfinity Games. With enhanced graphics, superb mechanics and best controls, Demonstar is the best game to play. The player has to destroy enemy bases, tanks, spaceships, and avoid their attacks to save the world. During the game, the player can use a variety of weapons and can upgrade them by collecting the power-ups while exploring the world. The player must struggle to explore the environment from vertical scroll, battle against enemies and destroy all enemy ships to clear the stage after facing the boss. Suddenly, the enemy launches the attack and take over the space environment. According to the plot, the Terran Fleet is creating a new prototype spaceship named as the RaptorX, and the player is selected as a test pilot of the Starfighter. The game introduces different power-ups including smart bombs, and more. It deals with top-down vertical shooting elements and takes place in the outer space world theme. The game offers an addictive gameplay based on earlier game Raptor: Call of the Shadow. This game will make you lose hours without a single regret (usually) and be so small, only taking up up to 51 megabytes.Demonstar is an Arcade, Shoot ‘em up, Single-player and Multiplayer video game developed and published by Mountain King Studios. But I will say it is without a doubt worth downloading. However I'd still buy this for 20 bucks (if it had the secret missions 1 and 2 games, PLUS an ability to create maps or possibly enemies a gamer can dream the impossible) today.I could EASILY make a 10 paragraph essay on how much this game can offer on both the deeply analyzed, and skin-deep levels. However, the difference between difficulties is in the enemies, but not how they act.Unlike many games that exist today, and are even highly popular, this game is one of the very few that can do proper difficulty scaling.Sadly I believe this game was short-lived, however the company that still lives today (at least their homepage does) still offers this game at a ridiculous 20 dollars. A game I find better than any Raiden game.ĪS i said in the title, i would like to say first off, that I consider this to be one of the greatest arcade fighter-type shooting games that show well done 2D environments. This game is easily learned as it starts you off simple and not even at a fast pace. All in all, this is very much a standard shooter that should keep any genre fan playing for a while, but which is likely to be discarded in short order. The visuals are pretty decent, with some nice enemy and environment design, while the sound effects are solid but add little to the overall experience. It's certainly an easy game to pick up, due to the simple controls, but not to master, thanks to the intensity of the action. While pretty much everything is perfectly serviceable, it lacks anything to make it really stand out. However, it's not going to keep you hooked for all that long, for a number of reasons. In all honesty, there's little else to describe about the game, and if you are in the market for another scrolling shooter, you might want to check this out. Your only job is to blast everything to smithereens, and this is achieved with the usual array of guns, bombs and powerups, while there's also the expected variety of bad guys and bosses to take your anger out on. This one does away with any pretension towards storylines and characters and instead simply throws you into the cockpit of a hi-tech jet fighter-type thing and sends you into a series of classic vertical scrolling action. It doesn't do anything new for the vertically scrolling shooter genre, but when all you want is to blow stuff up while surrounded by huge explosions and lots of gunfire, then this will certainly scratch that itch. Demonstar is certainly a very familiar looking game, and if you've played anything from Xenon 2 to Raptor and Raiden, you'll certainly know what to expect here. We were fighting-and killing millions of people-over divergent economic conceits. North Vietnam posed a purely ideological threat to the United States. American capitalism-and its glorification of all the domestic goods, appliances, and finery that money could buy-contributed to our grave fear of Communism. “I saw the clear reference to the home itself as being central to our ideology of why we were fighting people abroad,” Rosler said. “She decodes how images work by taking them apart,” said Darsie Alexander, who’s curating an upcoming retrospective of Rosler’s work at New York’s Jewish Museum, “which is what a collage structure does-quite literally taking them apart and putting them back together again, often in really jarring configurations.” The power of “House Beautiful,” she suggested, lies in how the series merged international and domestic tribulations. In another work from the series, House Beautiful: Giacometti, the windows of a regal sitting room with a floral sofa and pricy-looking artwork (including an ominous Alberto Giacometti sculpture) look out onto a black-and-white beach filled with immobilized bodies. Outside her window, we might expect to find a well-manicured suburban yard instead, we see a harrowing black-and-white scene of helmeted soldiers and their guns amid a rocky fortification. In Cleaning the Drapes, for example, a slim woman with a fashionable haircut appears to steam elegant, paisley-patterned curtains. Entitled “House Beautiful: Bringing the War Home” (1967–72), they juxtapose Time magazine’s shots of the Vietnam conflict with images culled from House Beautiful, a home décor publication. She used a Xerox machine to create new collages, which she handed out at rallies. Rosler decided to apply the formal concepts and techniques she’d developed in that series to one with an antiwar undercurrent. Her series “Body Beautiful” (1966–72) unites pictures of female bodies with those of appliances ( Hot Meat links a bared breast with a stove, Damp Meat a bare ass with a dishwasher). As part of her art practice, she was already making photomontages to counter women’s representations in the media. Yet Rosler was ahead of her time when she reconceived the printed matter distributed at marches and protests. Most groups now recognize the need for impactful visuals in 2002, the Design Action Collective was formed to create unique visual languages for clients ranging from Greenpeace to Black Lives Matter. The National Rifle Association has a circular logo with with an eagle standing on guns. The Women’s March on Washington created a simple logo comprised of three silhouettes of female faces. These days, it’s difficult to imagine a political position without a strong graphic identity, not to mention a cohesive social media presence. Rosler decided the cause needed a makeover. The pamphlets and other materials, she said, looked like they were made by people who were somewhat demented. “It would be these long texts that looked like they’d been translated from a foreign language, and they didn’t have images,” the artist remembered during a recent conversation with Artsy. Martha Rosler thinks that Vietnam anti-war literature of the 1960s and ’70s was hideous. The basic premise is simple: arrange thumbnail previews in a grid, and let the user choose which one looks best (tapping on any thumbnail will bring up a larger preview).
